Disaster Management

The Disaster Management Programme at the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society is a comprehensive initiative designed to address the diverse challenges posed by the country’s geographical diversity and vulnerability to various natural and socio-economic hazards. This programme integrates multi-hazard preparedness, health emergency response, water security, sanitation, gender equality promotion, economic resilience, and community engagement. In light of Papua New Guinea’s susceptibility to floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, cyclones, and health-related concerns, the disaster management programme seeks to enhance community resilience, reduce vulnerabilities, and respond effectively to emergencies. Additionally, it addresses economic impacts, violence from civil unrest, tribal fighting, and supports internally displaced people, contributing to the overall well-being and safety of the population.

PREPAREDNESS

The Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society focuses on preparing communities for potential disasters by conducting training programs, developing emergency plans, and raising awareness about risks. This involves educating people on first aid, disaster response, and evacuation procedures.

RESPONSE

During a disaster, we mobilize quickly to provide immediate assistance. This includes deploying trained personnel, delivering emergency supplies, setting up shelters, and providing medical care. They work closely with local authorities and other humanitarian organizations to coordinate efforts.
