PNG RED CROSS SOCIETY

WHO WE ARE

The Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society (PNGRCS) was first established as a Branch of the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Red Cross in 1951. Following the country’s independence, it became a National Society in 1976. The Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society was established as an independent National Society under the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society Incorporation Act 1976 and officially recognized as an auxiliary to the Government of PNG. Papua New Guinea Red Cross was thereafter recognized by the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1977 and admitted into the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in October 1977. The National Society has its Headquarters in Port Moresby. It is structured as a network of 12 fully fledged Branches, one interim and one sub-branch established in 13 provinces out of the 22 provinces in the country.

The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement

PNG Red Cross is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement that helps prevent and address the suffering of the most vulnerable communities. The Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is well over 151 years old and is grounded by the seven (7) Fundamental Principles and guided by the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and additional protocols of 1977. PNG Government is a signatory to the Geneva Conventions.

PNG Red Cross Auxiliary Status

The Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society is officially recognized by the Papua New Guinea Government as a voluntary aid society, auxiliary to public authorities in the humanitarian field through the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society Incorporation Act 1976. In accordance with the Geneva Conventions, it is acknowledged as the only National Red Cross Society which may carry out its activities throughout the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea. This auxiliary or support function, which derives from both international and national laws, and is a condition for recognition as a National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society, applies at all times, both in peace and in war. This means that the PNG Red Cross has a unique legal status: it is a private organisation with certain recognised public functions; it is neither part of government nor a nongovernmental organisation (NGO)
